When you're 16, it’s natural to start getting the taste of independence and crave any opportunity that affords you some time by yourself and with your friends. For most people, it’s pretty easy to get out of the house and go do your own thing. When you’re part of the world’s biggest boy band, well, it’s a different story.

Niall Horan recently spoke with Dermot O’Leary about his early days as part of One Direction. Niall was just 16 when he joined One Direction and was immediately thrust into the global spotlight.

Horan was asked if he felt like he ever felt like a prisoner during his time in the band as he responded, “A couple of times, yeah. Because we were 17, 18, 19 for the first few years, and I struggled with it.”

“As you know, I have to be doing something all the time and the thoughts of just closing the curtain in the hotel room was just madness to me,” he continued.

“I really struggled with the idea, ‘why won’t you just let us out? We just want to go for a walk!’ But you can’t get inside the brain of a fan. Now I completely get it, but at the time we were like, ‘You’re our age, will you just let us out so we can walk down the street! You must understand!’”

Niall Horan was just named the winner of RADIO.COM’s Ultimate Music Showdown as he beat out Queen for the title.
