By standard terms, Joe Mulherin has had an unconventional beginning of his career ever since he started nothing, nowhere. That “unconventional” approach has served him well and is part of why he’s been able to gain a sizable following. Oh yeah, he also makes incredible music.

nothing, nowhere spoke with RADIO.COM’s Kevan Kenney in an extensive conversation about his new record Trauma Factory, being based out of Vermont, and much more.
Mulherin makes Vermont his home and the area serves as a huge influence on his art. “It’s unfiltered, that beauty of nothingness,” he says. “You’re not influenced by, ‘influencers,’ or fashion, or any external things like that. It’s just kind of like you alone with your thoughts and it pulls some really beautiful things out of you.”
While he’s recorded in big cities like New York and Los Angeles, he opted to go to a spot that’s a little more local for his latest album Trauma Factory. His treehouse.
Mulherin had over 80 songs at his disposal for the album and sat down with his close friends in his treehouse to listen to every single song. That wasn’t an out of the ordinary move for him as he told Kenney, “I created this whole project [nothing, nowhere] from my parents basement when I started.”
Getting his music heard on the radio has been a goal of his for a long time. Now, it’s a reality for Mulherin. “To be able to record a song in my treehouse and to have KROQ and all these amazing stations playing it on the radio is a dream come true for me,” he says.
“I remember growing up driving in my mom’s car, in the backseat, listening to the radio and wondering if I’ll ever be on it. Here we are and it’s crazy, it’s so surreal.”
When he first burst onto the scene as nothing, nowhere, Mulherin was frequently associated as an emo rapper. While the label doesn’t really bother him, he wants his music to reflect what’s inspired him. “I always just think of myself as a dude who likes to make music and I kind of sprinkle in whatever I’m listening to at the time,” he says.
Mulherin added that when he first came out he was at the forefront of mixing guitar, emo, and rap together, but called it “a big buzz thing.”
“I think it’s cool,” he added. “People have never really seen it.”
