The chart-topping duo discussed their philosophy regarding "Black Music Month," noting that for them, it is a year-round reality rather than a singular event, and opened up about their feelings on the use of AI in music.
Jimmy Jam provided a metaphor comparing AI to the invention of the automobile, saying just as we needed to implement paved roads, lanes, and speed limits to keep cars safe, he argues that the music industry currently lacks necessary regulation regarding consent and compensation for AI usage.
Similarly, Terry Lewis compared the influx of AI-generated content to professional sports. “What happens when everybody in the stands comes down and becomes part of the football team? Dilution... It gives more access, but sometimes gatekeepers are good because it raises the quality level."
The pair also talked about the approach of the 40th anniversary of Janet Jackson’s Control album, the Michael Jackson biopic, and the possibility of a Prince biopic. “Oh, absolutely anything about Prince, I'm all in. I'm all ears.”
“I think there's a lot more levels to Prince.”
Jam and Lewis also reflected on the passing this week of Peabo Bryson. “We're talking about one of a kind, you know, God didn't make a mold when he made [him], he just was experimenting. He didn't even know the proportions,” they share. “I mean this man was well versed, well read, amazing vocalist, amazing human being, man. This guy was special. I'm just glad we got a chance to work with him.”
