nothing,nowhere., real name Joe Mulherin, didn’t have to challenge himself when coming up with material for his latest album. In fact, he had almost too many songs to choose from.
Mulherin had over 80 songs at his disposal for the album, but that’s not a process he’s looking to replicate in the future. “That was a trip and I might not do that to myself again,” he said with a laugh.
“I had two of my very close friends up to my house. We chilled in my treehouse, brought some KRK monitors out there and we listened to all 88 songs. We all had our notes app out on our phones. We would pick our favorites, listen to all of them and then we kind of like, deliberated and talked.”
“Turned out our [favorite] 15 were kind of the same and there some battles over what’s what, but at the end of the day I always refer to my best friends on what’s cool and what isn’t,” he added.
As nothing,nowhere., Mulherin dabbles in a wide-variety of sounds that’s led his art to be classified as genres like emo rap.
That label is something he doesn’t really pay attention to these days. “I’ve been doing this for a minute now and it’s just kind of like, ‘whatever’ to me at this point,” he said.
“So long as I make cool music and like, put it out, people can call it whatever they want.”
Mulherin also touched on a topic he’s never been shy to talk about, mental health. While acknowledging that the COVID-19 has been rough, he’s looking forward to the future. “I’m just trying to stay optimistic so I could get back out on stage and on the road, cause that’s when I feel the most alive,” he says.
“I’m just stoked to get back on the road with nice people, no egos, and just make music.”
