Today, June 6, marks the 75th anniversary of D-Day, the Allied invasion on the beaches of Normandy, considered the most consequential battle of the war effort. It turned the tide of World War II and laid the foundation for an Allied victory on the Western Front.
Nearly 160,000 men took part in the invasion; half of them were American.
Casualties were huge, with Allied casualties of at least 10,000 with 4,414 confirmed dead.
Besides the memorial ceremony held in Normandy today, each branch of the American military is remembering D-Day in its own way.
