A sailor assigned to the United States Navy's amphibious assault ship USS Boxer tested “presumptive positive” for COVID-19 on Friday. Just days prior, military family members visited the ship at sea.
The sailor, the Navy's first coronavirus case aboard a ship, is currently quarantined at home, according to a release from the Navy. Any individual that may have been in immediate contact with the sailor has been notified and are in self-isolation at their residents.
"None of them is aboard the ship currently," the release reads.
The USS Boxer "is taking appropriate preventative measures and conducting a thorough cleaning in accordance with specific guidance from the CDC."
The Navy has not responded to requests from Connecting Vets for further information regarding additional preventative measures being taken aboard Navy vessels — where service members typically interact in very close quarters.
As of Monday, 10 service members have tested positive for COVID-19.
