World War II veteran Euel Akins, 98, described his Honor Flight experience as "amazing and humbling" — and he's just one of 222,100 veterans Honor Flight has transported to visit the monuments in Washington, D.C.
For Memorial Day Weekend, veterans from Southern Indiana and Dayton will have the special opportunity to visit the monuments.
"It's always humbling to stand in the presence of greatness," said Lt. Col. Ken Dwyer said during a send-off event for veterans leaving Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah, Ga., for an Honor Flight trip on May 4. "We experience the freedoms that we enjoy in this great nation because of your loyalty to this country and the bravery you demonstrated."
