On January 17, 1991, a U.S.-led coalition of 35 nations began an air and ground war in response to the invasion of Kuwait by 100,000 Iraqi troops. More commonly known as Operation Desert Storm, this portion of the First Persian Gulf War lasted a mere three weeks. 

Between the military efforts and U.N. embargo and sanctions, the Iraqis were defeated and withdrew from Kuwait on February 28, 1991. This was the end of Operation Desert Storm and the First Gulf War.


Prior to the Operation Desert Storm, the preparations phase, known as Operation Desert Shield began after the Kuwait invasion on August 2, 1990, and lasted until boots hit the ground January 17, 1991.

Operation Desert Storm and Desert Shield were the first major foreign crises for the United States after the end of the Cold War. The successful completion of the war was one of the swiftest in history, however, the war took the lives of 383 service people.
