During a visit to her beloved grandmother’s gravesite a couple of years ago, Jennifer Blakeley was struck by a thought.
Looking around at the cemetery’s grave markers, she realized they all included the same thing: A name, a birth date, a dash and then a death date.
What happened during the years between the dash, Blakeley wondered.
During the COVID pandemic, QR codes became popular for shopping and scheduling events, Blakeley said. The codes can be scanned with a smartphone and take users to a website. That led her to another thought.
“Why are there not QR codes [at cemeteries] that tell everyone about the lives they lived?” she said. “It’s almost like your memory dies with the people who remember you.”
Blakeley, a female entrepreneur and popular photographer who has snapped photos of Megan Fox, Vince Vaughn and other celebrities, soon founded Life’s QR.
After registering and paying a nominal fee, the website allows family members and friends to post biographical information and up to 200 photos of their loved ones. Links to videos and outside sources can also be embedded.
“You can add as much or as little information as you want,” Blakeley said.
The website connects to a QR coded weatherproof ceramic tile which can be affixed to a gravestone or other common spot where it can be scanned with a smartphone. That scan brings up the memorial page online.
Blakeley, whose uncle served In World War II, said remembering the nation’s service members in this way helps to ensure that history is not forgotten.
“I want to know where they served and what their journey was like,” she said. “I want to know about their families, what made them join and really honor their sacrifice.”
