Metallica honors marching bands across the country and awards them instruments and gear

Closing out their first annual marching band competition, rockers Metallica have chosen this year’s winners and fan faves.

Presented by Metallica, Tama Drums, Sweetwater, KHS America, Zildjian Cymbals, D’Addario Woodwinds, Evans Drumheads, ProMark, Gator, Conn Selmer, and Hal Leonard -- five winners were chosen by the band, as well as two fan favorites picked by popular vote, with prizes of equipment, gear, and instruments totaling almost $200,000.

Picked from submissions sent in by over 450 high schools, small colleges, and large colleges from across the country, five finalists in each category were reviewed by professional judges, with the first prize in each category awarded by Metallica themselves. Take a look at the winners list and each of their submissions below.

College (Division 1) – $75,000 in prizing: Auburn University

College (Divisions 2 & 3) – $40,000 in prizing: Eastern New Mexico University

High School (Large) – $15,000 in prizing: Dobyns-Bennett High School (Kingsport, TN)

High School (Medium) – $15,000 each in prizing: Tied between: Boerne HS (Boerne, TX) and Malverne HS (Malverne, NY)

High School (Small) – $15,000 in prizing: Oakton HS (Vienna, VA)

Plus, the two fan favorite winners determined by popular vote received an additional $10,000 each in prizes.

Fan Favorite (College): Auburn University
Fan Favorite (High School): Dobyns-Bennett High School (Kingsport, TN)

Winners will receive musical instruments and equipment for their programs at the values listed above, provided by Metallica and the competition's sponsors.
