With all available ICU beds in the entire state of Mississippi now filled, one medical facility is getting creative and turning the bottom floor of their parking garage into a field hospital.

The University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson is already the state’s largest hospital, and they’ll have 50 more beds available for COVID-19 patients starting Friday thanks to some ingenuity in the face of dire straits, according to hospital officials.

Dr. LouAnn Woodward, who heads the medical center, tweeted about the severity of the situation on Monday.

As of Monday, Mississippi’s state health officer Thomas Dobbs had stated that every ICU bed at the state’s level 1-3 hospitals were occupied and that more than 200 patients were essentially waitlisted in emergency rooms.

Currently, the state’s highpoint for cases in one day was 1,444 on January 4, in the days before vaccines were available. Monday, Mississippi’s case-count sat at 1,410.
