It wasn’t easy being the eldest Brady.
Every once in a while, some sad backstage story about a favorite old TV show comes out to dent our gauzy nostalgic memories.
But at this point, it would take a nuclear bomb to crack the deep foundation “The Brady Bunch” holds in its fans’ hearts.
Barry Williams, who played Greg Brady on the beloved sitcom from 1969 - 1974 (and a few of its cheeky specials later), recently opened up to Australian morning show “Today Extra” about how stressful the seemingly feel-good family show was to film.
"The years were very intense years for me," the 66-year-old told the outlet. "All my teen years, 14 to 20, were on 'The Brady Bunch.'"
Adding to the stress was the fact that the other five kid cast members were going through their own puberties.
"There were a lot of changes,”Williams added. “You could hear the voice changing, you could see the hair changing, you could see the growth spurts going on with all of us. So, it was sometimes awkward and sometimes fun."
But despite the struggles, their bond working on the series made the actors closer over the years.
"We maintain our relationships,” said Williams, “we've seen all the major events of our lives together: marriages, children, sometimes marriages that split… Now our children are graduating. We've always had a Brady family together."
Williams reunited with his former Brady castmates, Maureen McCormick (Marcia), Christopher Knight (Peter), Eve Plumb (Jan), Susan Olsen (Cindy) and Mike Lookinland (Bobby), in the 2019 HGTV series "A Very Brady Renovation," in which they remodeled the home from the original series.
He’ll also rejoin Knight, Lookinland, Olsen and Robbie Rist, who played cousin Oliver on the show, in the upcoming Lifetime holiday movie, "Blending Christmas.”
Those Brady bonds are forever.
