It looks like football fans will have a newly scheduled game to watch over Thanksgiving leftovers.
The NFL is reportedly moving toward scheduling an additional "short-week game," in anticipation of a new game that would be played on Black Friday and aired on Amazon Prime Video.
The latest prelude to the expected move came at last month's owners meetings, where a resolution allowing the extra short-week game was passed, according to Peter King of NBC Sports.
Pro Football Talk had previously reported that Amazon was "very interested" in airing a Black Friday game on its streaming platform, Prime Video. The NFL, for its part, was said to have been "lukewarm" on the proposition.
But Amazon seems to have more clout with the league after buying the rights to produce and broadcast Thursday Night Football, and, according to King, the new game will be added no later than the 2023 season.
All sounds great … except the deal’s not done yet. It’s not as easy as it seems. There’s some opposition in the league about playing a game on Nov. 25, and there’s a decent chance the NFL will put off a Black Friday game on Amazon Prime till 2023. But it’s going to happen, I’m told, by next year at the latest.
Amazon is seeking to increase Prime subscriptions, and sees the Black Friday game as another selling point for prospective members, King reported.
