The first African American director, John Singleton, who was nominated for Best Director for an Academy Award has died.

This comes after having a "massive stroke" at a L.A. hospital. The Singleton family representative says that the director passed, "peacefully, surrounded by his family and friends."

According to TMZ, Singleton suffered a stroke after coming back from Costa Rica. He wanted to check himself in to a local L.A. hospital just to make sure that he's okay. Twelve days later, he suffered a massive stroke that put him in a coma.

Actors and colleagues went to their social media and paying their respects and sharing memories they had with Singleton.

He was 51 years old.
