“Law & Order: SVU” is coming up on its 500th episode. To honor the occasion, the show is bringing back fan favorite character, Detective Nick Amaro, played by Danny Pino.

The popular crime series made the announcement on Instagram, telling fans that Detective Amaro “will return to SVU for the show’s historic 500th episode.” The character hasn’t been seen since 2015, at the end of the 16th season, per PopCulture.com.

Amaro's four season tenure on the show (he debuted in 2011) ended with his character suffering a severe gunshot wound. The injury, paired with his inability to move up the ranks, caused Amaro to retire from the NYPD and move to L.A. to recover and plot his next policing move.

In keeping with the surprise theme, the show has not detailed the whys of his return, or whether it will be ongoing. Earlier in the summer, SVU show runner, Warren Leight, didn’t leak that the episode will be “insane," which leads one to believe that the character’s return might not be settled in one episode.

Pino also recently appeared in the new film adaptation of the hit Broadway musical, “Dear Evan Hansen.”

SVU has concurrently lost two characters. The Season 23 premiere saw the departures of Demore Barnes and Jamie Gray Hyder, as Garland and Kat respectively.
