Michael Caine is calling it a wrap on his acting career.

The Oscar winner told BBC Radio 4 the time had come to step away from the silver screen.

“I keep saying I’m going to retire,” Caine told the station. “Well, I am now.”

Caine explained he was prepared to leave his acting after his new World War II drama, “The Great Escaper,” has been getting positive reviews.

"I've figured, I've had a picture where I've played the lead and it's got incredible reviews," Caine said. "The only parts I'm likely to get now are old men, 90-year-old men, maybe 85. And I thought, 'Well, I might as well leave with all this — I've got wonderful reviews. What have I got to do to beat this?'"

Caine explained he hadn’t stepped away until now, he’s 90, because he finds it important for movies to feature older characters.

“With me, it’s not quite as diminishing as you think,” he said. “I remember when I was young talking to old men of 90 and they weren’t a little bit like me. They were little tiny old men with humped shoulders… And I thought, ‘I’m not like that and it’s changed.’”

While Caine is ending his legendary acting run, he’s moving into the world of the printed word with the release of his debut book, “Deadly Game,” in November.

Caine went on, saying he wouldn’t be returning to acting, but has plans to continue with writing.
