A restaurant in Florida received backlash after sharing a picture of their sign that reads, “FACE DIAPERS NOT REQUIRED! EVERYONE WELCOME.”
According to WFLA, Beckyjack’s Food Shack in Hernando County, Florida, posted a controversial picture on Facebook for Valentine’s Day.
The caption read, “Happy Valentine’s Day,” alongside a heart emoji. “A friendly reminder that we DO NOT require Face Masks.”
Jesse Fox, the restaurant owner, explained that he posted the sign because many customers who came in were “surprised we weren’t wearing masks.”
“So I was just trying to be proactive,” Fox said. “Everyone thinks I’m politicizing it and shaming people who want to wear a mask but my only goal was to let people know before they came ... we don’t require it.”
According to the Hernando County website, masks are not required, but they are recommended when social distancing occurs. The United States Centers for Disease Control also urges people to wear masks for both diners and restaurant staff.
Fox confirmed how his restaurant is receiving a lot of backlash.
Lori Carroll, a woman visiting the area, said she was disappointed to see businesses not making customers wear masks. She said it was disrespectful and very stressful.
“I feel like I’m out of state almost. That’s how I feel because the whole not wearing the mask thing is absolutely ridiculous,” Carroll said. “They need to educate themselves.
While the county does not require masks, Fox said he would follow those guidelines if rules change.
