Bynes was placed under the conservatorship in 2013 after a series of troubling episodes that documented her mental health struggles. One of those episodes included accidentally soaking her dog in gasoline while setting a neighbor’s driveway on fire, according to TMZ.

She was temporarily committed to a psychiatric facility and released to the care of her parents.

The actress’ attorney told PEOPLE, "Amanda wishes to terminate her conservatorship. She believes her condition is improved and protection of the court is no longer necessary."

A hearing is set for March 22.

Bynes’ quest for freedom follows Britney Spears’ successful legal fight of the same nature. Spears was under a conservatorship for 13 years, which ended in December before her 40th birthday.
