Krispy Kreme’s CEO is now defending the company against backlash on the internet after the donut chain began giving away a free donut a day for a year to those who have been vaccinated.
Some across the country didn’t think that this was a sweet offer.
According to USA Today, some urged Krispy Kreme to stop the promotion and explained how the health effects of eating a donut daily isn’t healthy.
Others said it also discriminates against Americans who do not want to receive the COVID-19 vaccine.
“Every incentive helps & free doughnuts may help move the needle,” Dr. Leana Wen, an emergency physician and visiting professor of health policy and management at the George Washington University Milken Institute School of Public Health, said. “However, donuts are a treat that’s not good for health if eaten every day.”
Krispy Kreme CEO Mike Tattersfield said, “We’re a sweet treat company…If folks don’t want to visit a doughnut shop, they don’t have to.”
He added that if “folks that want to get a vaccine, if they decide to combine a Krispy Kreme pickup (for) a doughnut, they can. That’s how we look at it… generosity.”
Last week, the company announced that it would offer a free glazed donut to anyone who flashed their vaccination card at locations nationwide. The promotion will run “anytime, any day, every day for the rest of the year,” Krispy Kreme chief marketing officer Dave Skena said.
No purchase is necessary to grab your free doughnut.
Employees at Krispy Kreme can get up to four hours of paid time off to go and receive their shots, following businesses like Best Buy, Target, and Trader Joe’s
