Happy Juneteenth 2024! It's the 159th Anniversary of the day enslaved African Americans in Texas were told they were FREE! That was 2 1/2 years after President Abraham Lincoln issued The Emancipation Proclamation. In 2021 President Joe Biden signed a bill making Juneteenth-Freedom Day on June 19th a national holiday! The same year the Austin City Council declared Juneteenth an official holiday! This all happened 21 years after Juneteenth officially became a Texas state holiday in 1980!

Recently the 'Grandmother of Juneteenth', Miss Opal Lee from Fort Worth received the Medal of Freedom. She has devoted her life to making history, rather than erasing it. When Miss Opal was 89 in 2016, she walked from Fort Worth to Washingon D.C. raising nationwide awareness. Now at age 97, she has not slowed her roll. She's raised money for the $70 million National Juneteenth Museum expected to open in 2026. Plus this year, Opal's Walk for Freedom on June 19 will have her finishing 2 1/2 miles at the African Museum of Dallas. It honors Juneteenth, while educating the nation about the importance of understanding FREEDOM is for everyone! Join from any location!
