As part of the Dallas Park and Recreation Department’s new eco-friendly vegetation management project, the city has hired 300 goats from Fort Worth and Weatherford to clear up almost 12 acres of land next to White Rock Lake.

According to the Dallas Morning News, winter is prime goat-gardener time, as most of the vegetation that grows is invasive, and the goats are always happy to enjoy a gourmet meal.

“They’ll basically eat anything woody that’s green,” said Brett Johnson, superintendent of environmental quality and conservation manager with the city of Dallas.

Dallas residents have been stopping for pictures with the goats, but they do actually serve a valuable purpose.

The goats are helping reduce wildfire risk, improving visibility near trails, restoring prairie health, and their hooves help break up thick layers of dead grass, which allows native wildflowers a better chance to bloom in spring.

And for anyone who wants to view the goats at work, city officials want to remind us that they are working officials and this isn’t a petting zoo, but taking pictures from a distance is encouraged.
