A magical thing is happening in Dallas ISD libraries: students are checking out more books.
After the district banned students from using cell phones during school hours, book circulation has increased districtwide by about 100,000 books between the last and current school years, according to DISD officials per the Dallas Morning News.
Hillcrest High School librarian Nina Canales said their checkout numbers doubled in just the first three weeks of school. She didn’t believe the figures at first and ran the numbers twice just to make sure.
At Young Women’s Leadership School, there’s been a 42% increase in book checkouts; at Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Magnet Center, a 63% increase.
And at E.D. Walker Middle School, there’s been an increase of 89%, from roughly 3,500 books to over 6,700 this year.
Nearly 30 states across the nation are enforcing cell phone bans in their schools.
