The end times are nigh.

A potential tariff on tomatoes could bring about the end of free chips and salsa at Mexican restaurants across the Lone Star State.

What good is a meal if you’re not already full by the time your food arrives due to stuffing your face with the free chips and salsa?

A 17% tariff was levied on imported Mexican tomatoes in an attempt to boost domestic tomato farms. However, bad weather hit both Florida and Mexico, which has caused tomato prices to rise more than 40% in 2026 alone.

José Ralat of Texas Monthly reported that an “old-school Tex-Mex diner” in Austin is charging $5.25 for chips and salsa, and a restaurant in San Antonio charges $3.95 unless customers spend $25 or more on other foods.

According to the San Antonio Business Journal, some restaurants in San Antonio are spending five-figure amounts of money on salsa ingredients!

On the plus side, next time you go out to dinner, you might actually get to eat your entrée because there will be no more free chips and salsa to fill you up.
