The massive Alemany roadwork project hit a milestone Monday morning as southbound traffic was shifted across the center divider and onto the smooth, white new concrete of the new northbound lanes.

The new northbound deck was completed Sunday afternoon, just a few days after roadwork began. Crews are now beginning to demolish and rebuild the southbound deck.

“We are asking motorists heading southbound just to be aware that they can either use Interstate 280 or just avoid using Highway 101 during daylight hours due to the reduced number of lanes,” says Caltrans spokesman Pedro Quintana. “And we’re also asking motorists who are traveling on southbound 101 through the construction area just to reduce their speeds to 35 miles an hour.”

Those slower speeds are much easier currently due to reduced traffic from shelter in place orders.

“We’re doing very good with our construction schedule,” says spokesman Bart Ney. “Originally this project was supposed to take 18 days and be done in July. We advanced that into April and brought the schedule down to 10 days. And so far our contractors done a very good job; it looks like we will hit it.“

Crews working around the clock expect to wrap up the rebuild during the early days in May.
