Monday was another tough day in Santa Clara County with 253 new cases of the coronavirus, 33 new hospitalizations and one more death. More than 6,500 in the county have contracted the virus.
Along with the rest of the state, indoor operations at restaurants, wineries, card rooms, movie theaters, zoos, museums and bars and breweries are all closed.
Gyms, barber shops, hair salons, other personal care services, churches, non-essential offices and malls have also been ordered to close their indoor operations Wednesday in Santa Clara County as well as dozens of others on the state's watchlist.
One of the earliest sectors to open is construction, and that will be allowed to continue despite some clusters on job sites.
Christian Rodriguez is a pipe fitter working on the massive new Google headquarters in Mountain View. Although several coworkers have contracted the virus, he says the work will continue.
"I think guys are a little more than willing to go to work just because of how we've been taught like that," he said.
He worries that his coworkers, used to working through illnesses and injuries, will ignore worrisome symptoms and come to work anyway.
"That whole macho, machismo, just tough it out is definitely a factor," he said. "You have a hangover or sneezing or a sore throat - something that you can work with that's not too bad - could be just early signs of COVID. And more than likely people are still going to try to go to work."
San Francisco and San Mateo counties are the only Bay Area counties not on the state's watchlist.
