The number of people in California with confirmed cases of novel coronavirus has risen as three new patients have been identified, including another revealed Sunday in the Bay Area.

A husband and wife in San Benito County have been diagnosed with the virus that's started a global health emergency, officials said Sunday. This marks the second person-to-person transmission of coronavirus in the U.S.

The husband had recently returned from Wuhan, China — the city at the outbreak's center — and passed the virus to his wife, officials said. They are both 57 years old.

There was also a woman from China who was diagnosed with the illness in Santa Clara County where she was visiting family, officials said Sunday. She was the second patient with coronavirus in that county.

Her case is not connected to that of a man in Santa Clara County who was sickened after recent travel to Wuhan, officials said.

"We still do not have evidence to suggest that novel coronavirus is circulating in our community," said Dr. Sara Cody, with Santa Clara County's public health department.

The woman has been isolated at her family's home, other than seeking medical care, since arriving, Cody said.

In all, there have been six cases in California and 11 in the United States. Across the world, there were at least 17,205 cases and 361 deaths from the virus
