You can drop the "presumptive" from Joe Biden’s title, because it’s official now: he’s the Democratic Party nominee for President of the United States.
The Bay Area played a role in the innovative virtual roll call vote as Biden received the necessary votes to become the party’s nominee on the second night of the Democratic National Convention.
Oakland Congresswoman Barbara Lee cast California’s votes along with LA County Supervisor Hilda Solis.
"California, home to our next Vice President Kamala Harris, casts 231 votes for Bernie Sanders and 263 votes for our next President, Joe Biden."
Biden edged out Bernie Sanders to receive the majority of the state’s votes even though Sanders won the CA primary, with the state’s elected officials casting their votes for Biden.
Lee and Solis used their brief time in the roll call to show support for Biden’s environmental platform.
"Climate change is not a hoax, it’s real, and communities of color have been bearing the brunt of this reality for generations," said Solis.
Lee added: "Joe Biden’s plan to crack down on polluters to protect our air and water is about environmental justice and economic justice."
Before the main event, Rep. Lee also rallied the state’s delegation, which she co-chairs. "Trump is an incompetent threat to our democracy, and yes, to our values and we must do everything in our power to send him packing in November."
California Secretary of State Alex Padilla said that means "we’re going to do our part to phone in and get out the vote in Arizona, Nevada, some other states," as California is nearly guaranteed to vote for Biden.
And it will be another prominent night for California on Wednesday as the state’s Senator Kamala Harris will be nominated as the party’s vice presidential candidate by her sister Maya Harris, niece Meena Harris and stepdaughter Ella Emhoff.
