The California State Assembly’s summer recess will be extended for at least another week after at least one lawmaker tested positive for the coronavirus.
LA Assemblywoman Autumn Burke says she has tested positive for the virus and is now in quarantine with her daughter. Burke is one of five people who work in the Assembly to test positive for the virus, but it is not clear if the other four are legislators or staff.
Burke says she and her daughter are not experiencing any symptoms but she worries that she may have spread the virus to others, as it took one week to learn that she had been exposed.
She warned others to take the virus seriously so they do not end up in the same situation.
“(The) heartbreaking feeling that you will feel when you know you have affected somebody and put their life in jeopardy, it will destroy you,” she said. “It will break your heart.”
Burke says she consistently wore a mask but did not always practice physical distancing.
The Assembly had been scheduled to return to Sacramento next week, but Speaker Anthony Rendon announced that will be pushed back so that the building can be deep cleaned.
