California corrections officials have announced the state's first prison inmate death due to COVID-19.
The state's Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said in a statement Sunday the inmate died at a hospital after contracting the coronavirus at the California Institution for Men in San Bernardino County.
According to the statement, no further details were released to protect the inmate’s medical privacy and next of kin was notified.
Nearly 60 inmates at the prison have tested positive for the coronavirus as outbreaks continue to hit California’s most vulnerable populations.
