Caltrain is about to announce a big service hike that will most likely begin next Monday, and more trains will be running up and down the peninsula even though the transit district is still in a financial free fall.

Caltrain spokesman Alex Eisenhart said ridership dropped by about 95 percent at the start of the coronavirus pandemic and it has barely budged upward. Service was cut by more than half, but with some workers in San Mateo, Santa Clara and San Francisco counties heading back to work that should change.

“We are getting ready to increase our weekday service schedule from 42 trains a day, up to 70 trains a day,” he said. “And that’s going to include three trains per hour during peak commute.”

He told KCBS that Caltrain is also cutting fares by 50 percent for low income riders.

“We wanted to do what we could to make transit more accessible for folks who maybe don’t have as much money as they did before the pandemic,” Eisenhart said.

Caltrain will bring back limited stop service during the commute hours, but not the baby bullets, at least for now.
