As the discussion over statues of historical figures heats up in the Bay Area, some residents in Marin County have "Sir Francis Drake" in their crosshairs - both the naming of the major boulevard and the 30-foot tall statue with that namesake near the Larkspur Ferry Terminal.
There is a to-do list for Robbie Powelson, founder of the Tam Equity Campaign.
"My sculpture is of an event, the event of an explorer coming to our shores," Patton explained.
"Where’s the Miwok representation, where’s our name, we need to have more of a presence here in Marin County," Vidauri said. "We need to be known instead of honoring somebody who was here less than a month. He was a murderer slash slave owner, murderer."
The Coast Miwok inhabited Marin and southern Sonoma Counties before Europeans settled here.
The City of Larkspur has decided to form a group to look into a possible renaming. The statue was reportedly vandalized following a protest Wednesday night over the controversial name.
