Firefighters rescued a person from a fire in a ninth-floor apartment unit in San Francisco early Thursday that was possibly caused by an electric scooter, according to the San Francisco Fire Department.

The victim was removed with serious injuries from the apartment in the SoMa neighborhood. A small dog was also rescued from the fire.

A neighbor witnessed several explosions as he got a newspaper outside of the building at 5:40 a.m. He told KCBS Radio that the victim appeared on the balcony, yelling that he couldn't get out of the apartment.

"I don't know if he's even still alive," said the neighbor.

A neighbor told KCBS Radio that the victim had had problems with the battery of his e-scooter.

Pieces of an e-scooter were seen in debris removed from the blackened apartment.

Firefighters said that damage was contained to the single apartment.
