Concern that the three-day weekend could lead to overcrowding at beaches and parks has prompted a number of closures, but East Bay Regional Parks remain open. Buntui Joshi and his family came to Coyote Hills Regional Park in Fremont for a Saturday morning bike ride, but a lot of other people had the same idea.
“It looks like national biking and hiking day,” Joshi joked.
Regional Parks expect high visitation during the Labor Day weekend. To avoid crowds try celebrating park activities at home, like picnicking, camping, BBQing & outdoor games w/small family gatherings. Let's keep parks safe this holiday weekend. #RecreateResponsibly #KeepParksSafe pic.twitter.com/DX4WbhUdTv
— East Bay Regional Parks (@EBRPD) September 3, 2020 Like the other parks open this Labor Day weekend, Coyote Hills has several restrictions in place. Visitor centers, water fountains and sports fields are all closed, swimming and barbequing are prohibited and face masks are required. Even with the safeguards, Nidhi Joshi is still nervous about hitting the trail.“Let’s see how it is once we go there, and then we can come back if it's too overcrowded,” she said.
Health officials are worried about the possibility that crowding this weekend could lead to the same kind of COVID-19 bump that followed Memorial Day weekend.
