Demonstrators were on the move in East Oakland on Monday afternoon protesting the most recent deadly shooting by law enforcement over the weekend.
Protesters with By Any Means Necessary (BAMN) marched in front of Elhurst Middle School, about a half block away from where California Highway Patrol officers opened fire on a 22-year-old driver and his pregnant girlfriend last Saturday night.
“Until these killer cops are in jail, we will not stop fighting,” she said. “We know that the real power for us is in the streets.”
The shooting is under investigation, but there are reports that Salgado tried to ram officers with a 2018 Dodge Charger, one of dozens of vehicles stolen from a San Leandro car dealership during a wave of looting in the East Bay.
Nonetheless, Hoku Jeffrey with BAMN said there is no excuse for police officers opening fire with assault rifles in a residential neighborhood.
This was the tenth deadly Bay Area shooting involving law enforcement since mid-April.
