The Oakland Police Department has confirmed to KCBS Radio that two Federal Protective Service officers were shot Friday night in Oakland, and one has died from their injuries.
The fallen guard was part of a two-man contract team protecting the Ronald V. Dellums Federal Building in downtown Oakland. The shooting happened in the area of 12th St. and Clay St. when a vehicle pulled up outside the Jefferson St. entrance at about 9:45 p.m., just half a dozen blocks from the protest outside Oakland Police Headquarters.
Until mid-morning, federal troops in full riot gear surrounded the complex while the FBI conducted an investigation. Just blocks away, Oakland Police battled protesters who broke into stores, looted, set several fires and spray painted graffiti on dozens of buildings.
"When someone targets a police officer or a police station with an intention to do harm and intimidate - that is an act of domestic terrorism," DHS Acting Deputy Secretary Ken Cuccinelli said.
The identities of the officers have not been released. A suspect has not been named.
In a statement Saturday, Gov. Gavin Newsom said: "This is a moment of pain for our state and nation. We are also mourning the tragic loss of a federal security officer and wounding of another in Oakland. Jennifer and I send our sincere condolences to their families, friends and colleagues. No one should rush to conflate this heinous act with the protests last night. A federal investigation is underway, and we should let that process play out."
The shooting occurred during protests in response to the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, and it wasn’t immediately known whether authorities have determined if the shooter had anything to do with the protest.
Now, the task of cleaning up downtown Oakland begins.
