Four inmates and eight San Francisco sheriff's deputies were hospitalized Tuesday after they were apparently exposed to fentanyl in the county jail.
The discovery of an unresponsive inmate unleashed the chain of events that sickened the group.
"The deputies who administered the CPR and were on the scene also were exposed to the narcotic, which we suspect was fentanyl," said San Francisco Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Nancy Crowley.

The Fire Department "dosed" the inmate with Narcan, a fast-acting drug to counteract opioid overdoses. Other inmates who showed symptoms of exposure were also given Narcan, Crowley said. The inmates were taken to Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital.
Four deputies have been treated and released, while the other four remain hospitalized.
