Neighbors who live near a sprawling homeless camp in Santa Rosa are increasingly worried about their safety after a propane tank exploded, causing a fire.

"Three booms" woke up one nearby resident who spoke to KCBS Radio when the tank ignited Monday in the settlement of more than 200 people along the Joe Rodota Trail.

Firefighters put out the flames, but a portion of the settlement was destroyed.

There have been multiple fires and visits from authorities, firefighters said.

Residents said there has been an increase in crime, mainly theft, and garbage, including feces and needles, as the settlement has grown in size.

Last week, Sonoma County supervisors allocated several million dollars to clean up and manage the half-mile long area. The funds would also be used for building shelters.
