“May the 4th Be With You Healthcare Workers” read one sign held by a Belmont police officer. Hundreds of police, fire and public works officers gathered outside the San Mateo County Medical Center Monday morning during shift change to applaud hundreds of healthcare workers.

“We’re here today to say thank you to these extraordinary heroes of America and the first responders of San Mateo and other cities in the area who’ve joined with us, to make sure that they realize that we recognize that what they’re doing is putting their lives on the line every day to save lives,” said Congresswoman Jackie Speier, who represents much of San Mateo County.

“We don’t ever get any attention like this so it’s kinda cool that the real heroes are recognizing us,” said ER nurse Kristen Sykes. When asked if she considers herself a hero, she said, “It doesn’t feel like it, it’s just our job.”
