Another institution of the Bay Area dining scene is permanently closing its doors.

The Berkeley eatery Fondue Fred will close Sunday to make way for an upscale apartment complex.

Fondue Fred is located in the historic Village at Telegraph Avenue, and has been serving Swiss cuisine since 1958.

Diana Barker works at a nearby vape shop which is also scheduled to close, and is sad that Fondue Fred will no longer be around in the near future.

“My mom used to eat there when she was a teenager,” Barker said. “She grew up here, so it’s sad.”

Neighbors are trying to save The Village, which consists of a collection of restaurants and shops inside a large enclosed courtyard.

Resident Darrian Willis often eats at Fondue Fred. “It’s hard for all of our local businesses,” Willis said. “They strive and work hard and provide for local people. Tearing it down is mind-boggling.”

The restaurant is scheduled to close on December 22.
