ORINDA (KCBS Radio) -- Four people were killed by gunfire late Thursday night at a short-term rental home nestled on a quiet Orinda street, said Contra Costa County Sheriff's officials. At least four others were wounded.

The violence broke out at what authorities said was a Halloween party being staged at a short-term rental property at 114 Lucille Way. The street is dotted with large single-family homes in a hilly area south of Highway 24, not far from downtown Orinda.

According to social media posts, an “Airbnb mansion party” flyer adorned with crime-scene tape and telling attendees to “DM  (direct message) for location,” had been advertised for last night.

One post sharing the flyer said doors would open at 10 p.m. The gunfire broke out less than an hour after that.

Neighbor Chris Gade told KCBS Radio reporter Doug Sovern he heard the party and saw wounded people fleeing the scene.  Neighbors were worried about their children. "Pretty much everybody on this street and the block above us has kids," said Gade.

Airbnb said the 4,000 square foot home where shooting occurred had been rented through its service. The guest who booked it violated the owner's rules by throwing the party there, Airbnb said in a statement Friday.

That guest has been banned from Airbnb.

"We are horrified by this tragedy," said Airbnb's statement. "Our thoughts are with the loved ones of the victims of this abhorrent act as well as the neighbors of the home."

One listing for the rented home, on the ViaMichelin travel site, touts the property as a "Gorgeous Orinda Home. Absolutely Stunning!" with rates beginning at €582 (about $650) a night.

Contra Costa County property records incate the home was sold in 2017 for $1,210,000.  A neighbor told KCBS Radio a family that had lived in the home moved away, and the buyers have since operated it as a short-term rental.

Mayor Inga Miller told KCBS Radio that it is a "somber day"in Orinda and said city officials were gathering information about the property. She was unable to confirm Friday morning if the house had been registered under Orinda's short-term rental ordinance.
