On Monday, Governor Gavin Newsom announced a three-state plan to lift the Shelter in Place order and resume normal economic activity, as soon as the waning of the COVID-19 pandemic allows.
At his daily briefing, Governor Gavin Newsom announced the framework for a return to normalcy, a regional agreement with the governors of Oregon and Washington.
“We can begin the process of the kind of incremental release of the stay at home orders that advance the fundamental principle of keeping people healthy, keeping people safe, using science to guide our decision making, not political pressure,” Newsom said.
The governors made this joint announcement just hours after President Donald Trump tweeted that it’s up to him, not governors, to decide when to open up the economy again.
....It is the decision of the President, and for many good reasons. With that being said, the Administration and I are working closely with the Governors, and this will continue. A decision by me, in conjunction with the Governors and input from others, will be made shortly!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) April 13, 2020Governor Newsom said this is not about politics and California’s decision will be based on medical metrics, parameters he will announce on Tuesday at noon.
But he said it’s clear that the coronavirus crisis is leveling off.
“Growing, but in a moderate way,” Newsom said. “The curve is being bent because of you.”
He said one of his concerns is not going back to normal too soon, which could fuel a second wave of infections.
