Gov. Gavin Newsom issued an executive action on Monday that aims to reduce vaping among teenagers.
There will be a state-sponsored public awareness campaign focused on the dangers of e-cigarettes, Newsom said.
The move follows a nationwide spate of serious lung illnesses and some deaths connected to vaping.
State regulators are instructed by Newsom's action to "reduce youth vaping consumption" by finding ways to ban illegal and counterfeit vaping products.
There will be $20 million set aside for the awareness campaign about vaping's risks. It may entail creating and posting warning signs where vaping products are sold and advertised.
There have been six deaths and 450 possible cases of severe lung illness linked to e-cigarettes and vaping since April, according to federal officials.
