A dramatic scene unfolded off the coast of Santa Cruz as the body of a grey whale washed ashore Wednesday.
About 100 people leaned over the railing along W. Cliff Dr. In Santa Cruz, a very popular and scenic area right on the cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean.
"It looks like (the rescue team) is trying to get a little more boat power," one spectator said. "The tail is wedged right in the rock down there. They’re having trouble, they’ve been trying to pry it out, pull it out to get it over that rock."
A marine rescue crew using a jet ski and a boat worked to move the whale’s body away from the rocks and tow it further out into Monterey Bay.
An investigation is ongoing as to the cause of death.
