A new center for puppy breeding has opened at the Guide Dogs For the Blind location in San Rafael.
The puppy center, which cost about $23 million, is expected to breed as many as 800 puppies per year that will become guides for visually impaired people
"All of our services are free at Guide Dogs For the Blind, including lifetime veterinary care for our guides," said CEO Christine Benniger."We receive no government funding. We're completely dependent upon the support of our communities."

In honor of the grand opening, the organization hosted a "puppy shower" for a yellow lab named Aurora, who will give birth to the first litter of next generation guide dogs.
Aurora partnered with a black lab named Ranger to create the litter. Dogs are usually pregnant for nine weeks before giving birth to a litter.
Along with cupcakes, games and balloons for excited guests, the expecting labs engraved their paw prints in cement to mark being the parents of the first litter of puppies at the new center.
