The heat is rising this week with temperatures over 100 forecast for Livermore on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The National Weather Service has posted a heat advisory for wide swaths of the Bay Area starting on Monday at 11 a.m. through Thursday evening, with even warmer temperatures expected further inland. The advisory covers the North Bay valleys and mountains, East Bay inland valleys, hills and Diablo Range and the Santa Clara Valley and Santa Cruz Mountains.
With the shelter-in-place order still in effect, many of the usual respites from the heat are closed, especially as indoor air conditioning is not common in Bay Area homes.
Many lakes and beaches are either off limits or have limited parking. Public pools and water parks are closed as are movie theaters and libraries. Even the Costco stores are closed on Monday in observance of Memorial Day.
Walnut Creek physician Dr. John Eidus says people need to listen to their body’s signals to cool off. “Their heart rate is racing a little bit. They feel lightheaded, they feel dizzy, they feel thirsty. And that should be warning signs that they need to get indoors, get to a cooler place and drink fluids.“
