A Hayward man suspected of fatally striking a 12-year-old girl in Castro Valley with his pickup truck and fleeing turned himself into authorities Tuesday morning, officials said.
Joshua Byrne, 24, showed up with an attorney at police station after 8 a.m, said California Highway Patrol Officer Gabe Walters.
The 12-year-old was struck around 3:30 p.m. Monday at Crow Canyon and Manter roads while she walked home from school with her older sister, Walters said.
“The family is obviously mourning,” he said. “It was horrible.”
After the collision, the driver of the car fled the scene, setting off a manhunt.
Authorities said they were searching for the driver of a “lifted” black Ford F-150 pickup truck.
