Firefighters prevented the Kincade Fire from growing overnight and have reached 60% containment of the blaze, Cal Fire said Thursday morning.
Weaker winds have enabled firefighters to make more progress against the flames. The fire had been 45% contained Wednesday night.
Evacuation orders have been lifted in many places. The Sonoma County sheriff's office said that 5,788 remained unable to return home, down from 180,000 who'd been ordered to leave their property.
Windsor residents returned home Wednesday and partied in the streets after authorities took down off-ramp barricades that had blocked the town for days. Mandatory evacuation orders were lifted in parts of Geyserville and Santa Rosa as well Wednesday.

Officials expect to have the fire fully contained on November 7.
