A new COVID-19 drive-by testing site opened on Tuesday on the campus of Cal State East Bay in Hayward, which provides more space for medical workers and the public than the site it replaced near Tennyson Park.

The testing is located on the campus parking lot along West Loop Road with signs directing drivers to it on nearby roadways.

The site is operated by Hayward’s Fire Department.

Several large white tents are set up with healthcare workers wearing full body protective gear.

Captain Don Nicholson told KCBS Radio that when hopeful subjects drive up, they are first interviewed to see what symptoms they have.

“They will take your temperature to make sure you do, in fact, have a temperature,” Nicholson said. “From there, you move up to the testing site and they’ll be testing people in their vehicles.”

There are only 200 test kits available and nearly all of them have been donated to the department.

While the site is scheduled to be open until 6:00 P.M., an early shut down is possible, but it will be open through Friday.

Nicholson said test kits are being processed at Avellino Labs in Menlo Park and results could be back within 24 hours.
