Officials in six Bay Area counties have ordered that public schools remain closed until May 1 as part of the attempts to limit the number of coronavirus cases.
The updated order in Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Francisco, San Mateo and Santa Clara counties — as well as Berkeley's separate system — extends the initial school shutdown order by a month.

Gov. Gavin Newsom had recently said that he didn't envision the state's darkened schools resuming classes before the summer break.
