The long-awaited expansion of BART service into parts of downtown San Jose and Santa Clara has been delayed by four years.

Officials now have now moved their target back from 2026 to 2030 for opening stations at Alum Rock, Downtown San Jose, Diridon Station and Santa Clara.

The delay has been blamed on design and environmental factors.

The Valley Transportation Authority is handling the construction and will turn control of the new line over to BART upon completion.

Another phase of BART's expansion is expected to be complete later this year with the opening of the Milpitas and north San Jose's Berryessa stations.
